Guide to Purchasing Pheasants and Quail

By Joshua Davies

While starting a new hobby, it’s good to have some expert tips on how to get started. Below you will find some tips which will prove useful when you begin your search to buy pheasants and quail.

To begin with, I suggest joining a couple of groups that center around raising birds. My local group, called the Utah Pheasant Society, is a group of hobbyists who meet up to discuss their experiences raising game birds. This is done through regular meetings, a once a year auction, a Christmas party, along with a show. If I hadn’t had the opportunity to participate in the club before I began raising birds, I would not have seen nearly the success I did. In fact, I probably wouldn’t have experienced any results at all.

But not only is a local club a good spot to meet breeders that you can buy your birds from, they’re indispensable with regards to knowing the particulars of the hobby. The purpose of these clubs is to share information, so don’t be hesitant to ask as many questions as possible. Many clubs have regular monthly newsletters as well, stuffed with useful information for the rookie and expert alike.

I suggest a membership to the American Pheasant and Waterfowl Society (APWS). They feature an outstanding newsletter that’s sent out nine times every year, with articles and classified ads. In addition, they put together a breeders directory of all members along with the birds that they own. This is a good resource for finding quality breeders of all types of birds.

If you join any one of the local or national clubs, you’re sure to make new friends who raise birds. Most of these breeders don’t advertise, so be sure to ask around. Most of the finest birds I own I would never have found if I didn’t build relationships with persons in the hobby.

If you follow the tips given, I guarantee that your experience raising fowl will be very successful and pleasant.
