iPhone manufacturer Apple just launched iOS 7 alongside the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C last week but there were more than 200 million users upgrading to this new mobile operating system. Although the iOS 7 update introduces a lot of new features and a visual overhaul, it does not make iPhones waterproof. However, many people destroyed their expensive gadgets as a fake Apple ad spreaded on social networks saying that the iOS 7 could waterproof phones.
“Update to iOS 7 and become waterproof. In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone’s power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry,” the ad says. It then goes on to explain what “iOS” is. The poster uses Apple’s same font and clean white background, and at the bottom of the poster is a promise that “waterproofing [is] covered by Apple’s warranty policy.”
The prank is believed to have been started by controversial forum 4Chan.
The Apple fake ad claimed that Apple users could make their iPhones waterproof by upgrading the device’s software. It appeared almost identical to the tech giant’s real poster advertising with images of the iPhone on a white background accompanied by neat text.
After the fake advert spreaded quickly on Facebook and Twitter, many users believed it and reportedly upgraded their iPhones. They even dunked their handsets to test the feature, only to find that they had broken the devices. Less than three hours after the prank started, some took to Twitter to make angry complaints at being tricked. “iOS7 isn’t waterproof!!! now my phones at the bottom of the river,” one angry tester wrote on Twitter. “Whoever said ios7 was waterproof **** you,” said another user who was fooled by the joke.
